Geocities is going away, so I am spending some time downloading my webpages that I still have there. The amazing thing is, there is so much stuff I'd just sort of forgotten about, like my stories. They were never great literature, but I miss that time. Also, I should write more. And I know I have promised this before, but this summer might be time for a major overhaul of my webpage. Its not like I'm going to be doing anything except looking for work. I'll need something to occupy my time.

I just spent an hour updated my webpage. It doesn't look it, but I have changed somethings. Like the date. Also, I updated both of my resumes, which actually took most of the time, not counting 15 minutes where it looked like I was going to lose all of my work. Stupid computer. Anyway, its up to date. The resumes look even snazzier on paper, let me tell you. I don't know how anyone could resist them.

It took longer, but finally theater jobs have been posted. Last year, I had ten applications out by the end of February. This year, I have 15 applications out, but its May. Most of those openings didn't even appear until mid to late April. Still, I have 15 applications out. Someone somewhere surely wants to hire a newly minted Masters degree'd teacher, right?

Google maps also thinks it would take 31 days of continuous walking to reach the southern tip of Alaska from Kansas City, and helpfully cautions that I should "Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths."
Also, the walking directions that Google Maps provides are 10 miles longer than the same trip by car.

Interesting. If I start in Canada and head to the US, Google Maps gives me distance in kilometers. But if I go the other way, Google Maps knows to give me the distance in miles.

I spent the afternoon mowing my sister's yard. Between carting the mower to her place (she had let the yard go and needed a power mower, not the push thing she had) and then needing to go get gas for the mower and the actual mowing, it took the better part of two hours. I am covered in pollin and grass particles, and need a shower, which is where I am off to now.

And then there was this song which was just sexist and offensive.
Speaking of sexist and offensive, they played some sort of game at the lockin which I had to complain about. Each team had to put forward 5 players. The first player had to swallow a whole bottle of chocolate syrup. The next, chug a bottle of water, the next a quart of milk. The fourth had to eat five hotdogs, and then the last person had to put on a frozen wet t-shirt. Only, the last person "had to be a girl." This was repeated several times. Had to be a girl.
The whole exercise was just juvenile hazing-esque activity with a good dollop of sexism to round it out. I complained. I don't know if it will do any good, but there you are.
I spent the rest of the evening wondering if some of the other adults were annoyed with me. A weird feeling, all told. Like I was ruining their evening or something? That might be projection. I don't know. There's such a natural tendency toward conciliation toward strangers that to break that by bringing up a point of discord felt awkward.
So, maybe I annoyed them, and maybe I didn't, but I didn't really have a great time chaperoning on Friday.

On Monday, I drove out to the college (an hour drive, one way) to pick up my robes and mortar board and other regalia. Well, they had the robe, and the mortar board, and even the collar, but they did not have the tassel. Good one, UCM. By luck, my brother is going to Warrensburg tomorrow, so he might be able to pick up a tassel, if he can get there before the bookstore closes. Otherwise, I'll just go to graduation a little early to grab one.
Still, having the actual regalia is pretty exciting.

I read this entry by Ezra Klein, talking about systemic risk, and I wondered. Would it be possible (or prudent) to do to the banking sector what we propose to do to the pollution sector? That is, a cap and trade on, oh, I don't know, leveraging? So the system as a whole can only be leveraged, say, 5 to 1 (or whatever), but if certain banks wanted to have riskier portfolios and loan more money, than they could buy leveraging credits from banks that were leveraged below average? This might be a dumb idea, or unworkable, or foolish for some other reason, but it seems to me that, if we have a true system of banking, we need to think about systemic solutions, not simply regulations of individual banks. Thoughts?
