I had a leisurely morning, slept late, had breakfast, called to a potential employer, took a shower, and when I got out, I had lost my glasses. I spent 20 minutes tearing apart my room and closet looking for them, to no avail. I called the school, and let them know I was running late. It was so embarrassing to have to say, "I can't drive right now because I can't see." Finally, I went looking for contacts, or anything I might use to correct my vision. I found an old pair of glasses, and that worked. It felt weird, but at least not everything was a blur.
I walk back into my room tonight, and there are my glasses, sitting on a shelf.
Le sigh.
At least I found them.

A commercial on TV brought to my attention an artist called Kehinde Wiley. His work is absolutely stunning, and stunningly good. He paints urban black men in the manner of the great artists, and is able to capture both the feel of his subjects, but also the mood of the original portraits, without making them cheap, or camp. Beautiful, beautiful works.

I read A Wizard of Earthsea today, starting yesterday. A short book, and a quick read. It reminded me why Ursula LeGuin is one of the greatest writers ever. I don't know how formative her works were for me, except to say that I think they were formative. I want to gush more, but I don't think I have to for this audience. You know how good she is.

I got paid yesterday, my first substantial paycheck since December 18th. I went a little crazy, and bought some things which I had been doing without, in my estimation. Splurged a little. Ordered pizza. Got money out of the ATM. Paid my library fine. Rented some movies. You know, extravagant things like that. It was very nice, to have the option to do so.

On the one hand, I think its great that this article has such a blatent point of view. More journalism should be so openly biased. On the other hand, I am annoyed because of how the data is presented. In the end, they discuss 6 "bad" teachers in detail, mention that there might be as many as 1000(!) in the district, and never once mention that the district in question employes over 40,000 teachers. In short, we are talking about a tiny percentage of people.

Here is the thing, I don't believe that one, two, or even three or four Republicans added to a majority of Democrats is really "bipartisan". One, two, or even three or four simply isn't enough. Now, I don't have a problem with bills being partisan, so that may be part of it, but the fact is that unless significant Republicans come over, there's no there there. The Democrats control 60% of the congress (about) and the Presidency. Anything they pass will be a Democratic bill. They should embrace that, pass good policy, and to hell with the optics of getting a handful of Republicans as "bipartisan" cover.

I've done laundry, washed my sheets, gone to the grocery store. I need to vacuum in my office because I spilled pencil shavings on the carpet, and those can't be got up by brushing. And I've brushed the dog. All that, and I've been up since 5:30. Now I can't take a nap, or I'll wake up at 9 and never go back to bed.

I am not sure how I feel about this. The whole point of statutes of limitations (I thought) was that people were entitled to a speedy trial. A trial which cannot proceed because the only defendent is a strand of protein (and thus unable to assist in its own defense) is not what I would call speedy. I admire the ingenuity of the attempt, but I think it must be constitutionally dubious.

I was told my car insurance would be increasing 26% this month, although now that its hit my account, it looks closer to 33%, which is insane. Absolutely insane. If I can keep it until September, I think it will drop, hopefully significantly. Part of that is having had steady insurance for 4 years, part is turning 30, and part is the first claim dropping off.
